Most practice management tools in the legal industry feel outdated and clunky, and firms often end up depending on one unofficial "power user" to navigate the system. The Proper Trust has moved firms off platforms including PC Law, Juris, Abacus, Needles, Practice Panther, and MyCase, and has rebuilt trust account records by hand when a previous migration was done incorrectly, in some cases more than once before we were brought in.
Why it matters:
Data migration between legal software platforms is rarely a simple transfer. Trust accounts, receivables, and client costs all have to be validated and correctly mapped in the new system, and if a migration was done by a vendor's integration team without accounting validation, real problems, like trust balances that don't match, can go undiscovered for months. We treat validation as non-negotiable rather than assumed.
This includes:
- Full migration from your current system to a new platform, including trust accounts, outstanding receivables, advanced client costs, billing history, and matter records
- Side-by-side validation of old and new records, not just a vendor's word that the data "came over successfully"
- Timing built around a clean break point, ideally year-end or quarter-end, never mid-billing-cycle
- An overlap period with your old system, including through January if payroll is part of the migration, so W-2s and year-end filings aren't disrupted
